Broadway’s smash hit musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” has been nothing short of a huge success, and this will be certifiably true come Sunday, September 23, 2007 when the musical will bring to life its 1,000th performance of this musical chronicling a spelling bee competition between a handful of children. Showcasing six young people who are all the best spellers in their respective school districts and who are all at that awkward state of pre-pubescence when being the best at something like spelling makes you a bit of a social outcast rather than a stand-out student, this musical is as hilarious as it is heart-achingly familiar.
As these students come to learn, some for the first time in their young lives, that losing a competition does not necessarily make you a loser, the audience watches them come into their own and come to terms with their successes, their failures and those aspects that make them individuals all worthy of greatness. With its added spin of audience participation, this 1,000th Broadway performance of “Spelling Bee” will also welcome onstage its 4,000th volunteer speller, a coveted spot that many a fan of this musical will undoubtedly be striving to receive!
